My friends and I endured these frustrations for 2-3-hour sessions nearly every night for the past week. This game has tonnes of potential, but it looks like it’ll be a while before it’s realised. It sounds like I’m hating on B4B, but I’m not. The one thing this game isn't short on is blood, or zombies. You just circle-strafe and hope that nothing appears behind you. Special zombies (or ridden, as they’re called in B4B), usually appear out of nowhere and with no warning, giving you no time to prep or plan.

Usually, when a horde attacks, it’s each man for himself, so to speak. You can’t place a sniper on high ground to give you cover, or have a melee build guard a choke point while everyone else scrounges around and completes objectives, for example. Most of the maps are just large, open areas with few chokepoints, offering little tactical choice as far as battle-plans are concerned. Sadly, these tactics are let down by poor enemy and level design. And when playing with friends, that’s exactly what you can experience. It’s not hard to imagine a team comprising a medic, a brawler, a sniper, and a heavy machine-gunner, all working together to quell the unending hordes of undead. It’s this customisation that has me excited for the game’s potential. Throw in weapon upgrades that can dramatically change how your weapon feels, and characters with unique bonuses, and you can see how team management ends up as a mini-game in itself. Just the elements you need for a proper zombie game. You’ll unlock dozens of powerful cards within the first few hours of gameplay alone, and these cards truly help liven up the gameplay by adding a tactical element to your team configuration and character selection.īlood, guts, and glory. I was sceptical of this mechanic during the beta, primarily because I could detect the familiar stench of microtransaction-hell lurking underneath, but so far, the system is well implemented. The card selection is randomised so you can’t stick to a favoured build, but you can improve your odds by creating appropriate decks. You pick a deck at the start of each session and then draw a card or two at every checkpoint. You can use these cards to create custom decks comprising 15 cards each. You can get a 50% reload speed boost, for example, at the cost of not being able to aim down sights. Each of these cards offers some kind of bonus, and usually a penalty, when activated. You earn “supply points” as you complete each level, and you use these points to unlock cards.
